Starting Strength #2

Back at it today with workout #2. Weights for this one were:

  • Back Squat: 3×5 @ 268#
  • Strict Press: 3×5 @ 135#
  • Clean: 3×5 @ 135#

Yes, I can clean more, but my technique needs some work, so I started out on the lighter side. I got a bit of help from Fio today and will try to work on the things he was coaching me on.

Haven’t gotten much sleep these past 2 days. Brenna has been up at night a lot so V and I have been dragging. Still though, getting into the gym gives me a feeling of accomplishment.

Weight today: 224#

A break from the regularly scheduled programming…

Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans…

Starting Strength was going well, but I had to take a week off to come and spend some time with Victoria’s family in Mississippi. They have had some unfortunate events occur on both sides of the family and it was clear that us being with them and they getting to meet Brenna was something that needed to happen sooner rather than later.

While the selfish part of me is, well, selfish about wanting to get back on track with getting things right for myself, I am happy to be able to support her during these rough times with her family. It’s really more important that how many inches my waist is measuring.

It has been great to see her family and to see their reactions to Brenna. It saddens me that we don’t get to see them as often, but it’s important to cherish the times that we do.

At any rate, we will be back in Austin next week and I will likely start over with week 1 to hopefully get some consistency in.

Intervals and Starting Strength #3

Yesterday I did intervals. 8×30 second all out intervals on the C2 to be exact. I rested about 2.5-3 minutes in between each to recover fully. I averaged about 175m on each round. It really tired me out.

Today was starting strength #3. I rushed through this today as we’ve got a bit of a family emergency to tend to. I super-setted the bench press and back squats, then moved on to deads. All in all it took about 25 minutes. I also didn’t do as many warm up sets. Shame on me…

Weights were as follows:

  • Back Squat: 217# – felt good. After talking to Chad about the bar position on my back, I was able to adjust today and it felt a lot more stable and a lot LESS painful on my upper back.
  • Bench Press: 180# – this also felt good. No other comments here.
  • Deads: 325# – good and heavy but doable. Thank goodness these are only 1×5.

Weight after workout: 223#

Starting Strength #2

Squats

Went up 3lb to 268# on 3×5 back squats. Felt good.

Strict Press

WOW, I have lost a lot of strength here. I test 135# and decided to keep it there for the 3×5.

Power Clean

Just like the strict press, I feel like I lost a lot of strength here as well. I used to be able to clean 155/165 with no problems. I test 145# for this and decided to stay with that to keep my form looking good.

Weight after workout: 223.5 (-1.5)

Back To It

Well quite a bit has happened since I last posted here. I will write about brenna in a separate posting but I just wanted to quickly post about getting back into caring about my health.

See, for about 8 weeks, we have been at the mercy of a beautiful little baby girl. While I enjoy doing anything and everything for her, taking care of ME has pretty much fallen by the wayside. It started with bad sleep. Horrible sleep. Then, we add in the very bad food choices due to severe tiredness and mostly a bad case of “I don’t give a shit” or “I am too damn tired to care”.

8 weeks later, I have gained almost 10 pounds and I feel like chewed up spit out crap (except for when Brenna smiles at me…that’s the best but it doesn’t make me loose weight).

Ms. Brenna has been sleeping a lot better at night and recently V and I have tried to set a schedule for getting back into working out. I have long felt like 4 CF workouts per week wasn’t really the most ideal thing for me. I have seen other people that benefitted from a more strength (and less met con) biased program, so I am going to give that a shot. So, I will doing a strength based program (Rippetoe’s Starting Strength) Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the 2 CrossFit workouts on Tuesday and Thursday.

I started on the strength program tonight. Here are some notes that I took as I was getting started:

Squats
Did 1×5 @ 300 and it was really heavy. Dropped to 265 for form.
265 was challenging but good. I think is a good starting point

Bench
155 feels too light for the working set. Upping to 175.
175 feels good.

Dead lift
315 was a good starting weight.

Weight after workout: 225

Since my diet has been atrocious lately, I am posting in a food blog again to get some public accountability out there. I don’t care if anyone reads or follows it. I just need to know that the world can seer what I am eating and that alone will help keep me honest. If you’d like to follow it for whatever reason, the address is http://food.familyofgoldsteins.com.
