I hope you have all been keeping up to date with my life via my incredibly in depth tweets =).
Quite a bit has happened since the last time I wrote. I have wanted to write a blog many times, but well, life’s been pretty busy lately. For the 2 weeks prior to this week, work was keeping my VERY busy. You can read about that here.
I have spent most of this week in a dazed, drugged sort of state. Why you ask? Calm down, I am about to tell you.
I spent the weekend, rather, the one day that we weren’t busy (Sunday) doing some chores around the house. Troy came over and helped me add a pull up bar in the garage which I love. I started building a 2′ plyo jump box, which I still haven’t finished yet. Lastly there were 2 hose stations that I needed to get hung outside.
The pull up bar and jump box inspired me to start getting back into the crossfit WODs. That being said, the workout for Monday was:
30s dead lift, 30s rest, 30s cleans, 30s rest – 8 sets. Rx 135lb.
I knocked the weight down to about 100 b/c I didn’t think I could make it through 8 sets @ 135lbs. I got through the workout and actually felt great. I was happy and proud of myself for getting back on track with xfit.
As the day went on, I started getting a bit sore, which I expected. I went to KF, practiced, taught my tai chi class, then reviewed leopard katas. By the time 830pm or so rolled around, I was starting to get really sore and tight.
We got home and watched some TV then got in bed. This is where the trouble started. I started tossing and turning. I couldn’t find a comfortable spot. My lower back hurt, a lot. I tried heat and ice… nothing helped.
After about 30 minutes of of this, Victoria urged me to go the ER. I am happy I listened. The wait wasn’t too bad although, to me, it seemed like an eternity.
Finally, I was able to see the doctor and they gave me the following (keep in mind, they gave me 2x doses of everything):
- 2 shots of valium
- 1 shot of morphine
- 1 shot of something else, I think it was a muscle relaxer
Apparently, my muscles were really tight and going through spasms. I have never felt anything like this before.
By the 4th shot, the doctor was surprised that I was still awake. I have to admit, so was I. That was NOT a fun night. They let me go with prescriptions for ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer.
The next 3 days really sucked. I couldn’t sleep or even just find a comfortable spot.
I went to the doctor for a follow up visit and they prescribed some hydrocodone. Since then, I have been able to sleep and at least just feel some mild pain. It’s bearable.
Today has been the best day since the ER visit. Still though, I am trying to not do too much around the house. I am trying to rest as much as I can. Occasionally, I am using tennis ball and the trigger point grid roller to try and massage the area. But still, not too much.
Moving forward, I am going to be scaling these workouts back quite a bit once I am ready to start working out again. When I say scale back, I mean, to the point where it’s almost easy. I can’t go through this kind of thing again.
I am a firm believer in the fact that the universe, god, tao, nature, whatever you want to call it presents you with lessons throughout your life. If you don’t learn the lesson, the consequences get stronger each time until you finally say “OK, I got it”. Well… I got it.
I am sad because I was actually really looking forward to going trail running again on Sunday, but, I don’t think I will be ready. V and I went last Sunday with Cindy and I have to say that it was actually fun. I have NEVER liked running, but the trail kept my mind engaged and kept me from thinking about all of the crap that I normally think about like “when’s this gonna be over”, “how far have I gone”, “how much longer”, “this hurts”… etc.
